Manor Lords Publisher: Studios Should Prioritize Dev Team Care Over Viral Hits


According to Hooded Horse, the publisher of Manor Lords, developers and publishers should adopt a rational approach to achieving viral success.


In every way imaginable, the debut of Manor Lords, the first game developed by Slavic Magic, shattered the launch records previously held by Cities: Skylines and Civilization 6. In the month of May, Hooded Horse said to Game Developer that "publishers shouldn't be judged by their biggest hit." With this in mind, it would be "a little unfair to judge us" based on the success of Manor Lords.

In a fascinating conversation with Rock Paper Shotgun, CEO Tim Bender of Hooded Horse Company described the publisher's all-encompassing approach to video games. Through the maintenance of a business model that does not impose financial pressure on developers, Bender avoids the quest for a golden goose in order to placate investors.
